Out of all the knockouts of 2012, the best one by far is the kick that stopped time. On January 14, 2012, Edson “Junior” Barboza sent a full force spinning heel kick to Terry Etim’s face. Etim fell back in awe – actually he seemed to freeze – as he fell back on the mat in a pose similar to the Wizard of Oz’ Tin Man when it rained.
That UFC 142 knockout may be a glimpse of what to expect in the UFC on FX fight this Saturday night. MicroTech is sponsoring Barboza against Lucas "Mineiro" Martins as they go head to head in the Ibirapuera Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil. As the fourth preliminary match of the main event, Vitor Belfort versus Michael Bisping, Barboza’s fight airs live on Fuel TV at 6 p.m. ET. The main card is on the FX channel starting at 9 p.m. ET.
Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Barboza is a powerful striker with a 10-1 record. His original opponent, American mixed martial artist Justin Salas, suffered a training injury and had to back out of the fight. His new challenger Martins is an undefeated rookie who is looking to make a name for himself. Martins fought 9 out of his 11 total matches in 2012 with his last bout ending in a head-kick knockout.
With the help of long-time MicroTech friend and former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, Barboza moved to New Jersey to learn some new tricks. “I’m training in everything – jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing – I think I’ve improved everything,” Barboza told MMAWeekly.com.
