Vienna, VA - July 1, 2010 — MicroTech, a leading technology systems integrator and major supporter of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), announces that UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar has been nominated for an ESPN ESPY Award for his upset victory over BJ Penn at UFC 112. MicroTech is a longtime sponsor of Edgar, and sponsored him during the now-classic championship fight. UFC champions Georges St-Pierre and Edgar will be representing the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in this year's ESPY competition, and the fans' vote decides the winners.
The ESPYs are sports network ESPN's annual awards show. The show features an all-star lineup of top athletes and entertainers to celebrate the best sports stories of the last year. The ESPY nominations were released to the public on June 24th. Edgar is one of four nominees for the "Best Upset" award.
One of the biggest upsets in UFC history, the April 10th match in Abu Dhabi was the champion Penn's first loss since 2002. Edgar won a unanimous decision over Penn – at the time, the consensus No. 1 fighter in his weight class in the MMA world. Post-fight, Edgar acknowledged the stature of his upset win by proclaiming, "BJ's the greatest lightweight ever..."
